Our activities
Technical work and involvement in European committees
The basis of our technical work is to support our members in their obligation to comply with the high production challenges in the European area concerning health and safety, environmental aspects and in meeting the requirements of all relevant standards. For our biggest product group in the sector of bituminous membranes for roof waterproofing – the polymer modified bitumen membranes – a pan European Product Declaration (EPD) has been developed. The EPD provides the complete eco-balance of this product group. You can find information on the environmental impacts from cradle to grave, a description of the raw materials used as well as information on the most common application technique, the use phase and the waste treatment. In addition, EPDs for bitumen lightweight underlays and bitumen shingles for pitched-roof coverage have also been developed. Health and safety of products and raw materials used in the production of roofing and waterproofing products is an important issue in our association. EWA follows the REACH process and also the activities of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) very closely. The performance of the products of our members is monitored in many respects, for example the behavior in respect of fumes and aerosols and concerning leaching. Our aim is to collect all relevant information regarding these issues in our sector as well as encouraging “the industry” to provide further information by individual analysis carried out by independent institutes. To enlarge our members' technical knowledge we are members of leading industry associations such as Construction Products Europe (CPE) and also enjoy close relations with the associations of raw material suppliers like Eurobitume. The technical expertise of EWA is made available to several technical committees in CEN and CENELEC. We see our industry increasingly faced with the demand for tests performed by manufacturers to describe the performance of their products. Our aim is to collect these single requests and discuss them on a European platform across company borders. If possible, we would like to answer these requests by providing information via European test standards under the umbrella of CEN. Our association is against national barriers to trade via technical characteristics and we oppose the needless testing of well-known products. EWA supports its members with the most current information on the Construction Product Regulation (CPR) and the correct marking and labeling of the products placed on the European market. |
